CCNA/CCDA Training: Day 2 -- Subnetting and Examination

I am not going to go over most of the boring details of what went on today. Just know that most of the morning we covered the topic of Subnetting, as it has traditionally been a heavily tested subject on the CCNA exams. We pretty much spent most of the time up until our lunch working on this, which was fine with me because I wanted more practice.

For this class, we are testing for CCNA certification in two parts. The first test was this afternoon, where we could start it anytime between 16:00 -- 18:00. After lunch I was feeling pretty confident, and pretty much considered myself a subnetting god at that point. I spent a majority of my time before the test studying more on the concepts and troubleshooting aspects of routing, and I spent some time going over the router commands.

Ugh, I said I was going to spare you the details and here I am explaining the day to you in bloody, boring detail. To pass the first test, one needs to score an 825 out of 1000. I scored a 914.

You remember what ol' Jack Burton says at a time like that: Have you paid your dues, Jack? Yes, sir, the check is in the mail.

CCNA/CCDA Training: Day 1 (continued)

Well, we got the missing part that was necessary so we could connect our laptops (HP Compaq nx9010) to the Cisco 1600 router. So, I was able to get to work on about 5 labs today. And now I have homework. It's also 10:45 CST, so it would be nice if I am in bed by midnight. Tomorrow we get more lecture and work, and then in the evening we take the first part of the CCNA test (we are testing for the CCNA by taking two tests, one Tuesday and one Friday; CCDA will be tested on Sunday). Fun, fun.

On a totally different note, I must ask that all heterosexual men out there purchase the March 2006 issue of Stuff Magazine. The pictures aren't even up on the website yet, but the covergirl is Stacy Keibler from the WWE and also Dancing with the Stars. Christ, just look at the cover and buy this magazine.

CCNA/CCDA Training: Day 1

Class started at 08:00. For the rest of the week, we should be starting at 09:00, but today was an early start to get introductions and other incidentals out of the way. My class is pretty full as we are at 12 students. As usual, we all have varying degrees of competence when it comes to networking and Cisco products. Lecture pretty much began at 08:30 and went on until 13:00 when we stopped for lunch (We did have breaks for the instructor and others to take smoke breaks). Breakfasts and lunches will be provided for the entire week, which helps out. We came back to class at 13:30, and we were going through the material until we hit the point where we were just about to get into our first lab.

Now, the camp has provided each student with some items they can use for the duration of the camp. We were provided with 2 books, a CCNA Study Guide and a CCNA Cram Guide. We were provided with our own laptops (some type of Compaq) which have a lot of self-test materials pre-loaded. And then for use in the lab we have been provided with Cisco routers and switches. Our first lab is to connect to the Cisco router through a console connection and configure the router for use. We have been provided with a rollover cable, which allows us to connect to the RJ-45 port on the router through the Serial Port (RS-232) on the back of the laptop. Normally this would be no problem, except for one tiny little detail. There is no serial port on the back of these laptops. I have one on the back of my Dell Inspiron 8200 that I am using to write this, but there is no serial port on the back of the Compaq. So, we took an early break for dinner while they go find serial-to-USB adaptors. Even away from work, the fun never ceases.

Time's up, let's do this!

So, I am writing y'all from my hotel room here in Austin, TX. Met my training class instructor about an hour ago. It looks like the class will be fun since the instructor has a wealth of knowledge, both pertaining to Cisco and to utter nonsense. But make no mistake, it will also be a lot of work. Teach didn't give us anything to do for tonight, but he promised us pain for the rest of the week. OK, he really didn't do that either but he did say we were going to be in for 16-hour days. It should be fun.

Chuck F'ing Norris!

OK, I cannot find the article online yet, but the St. Petersburg Times has a front-page article on the Chuck Norris phenomenon. It was also being discussed on one local radio station, 97X, when I came in to work this morning. That's simply awesome.

We can rebuild him. We have the technology!

Earlier I had mentioned that I was trying to improve myself, professionally and personally.

On the personal side, I want to say that I have made a decent start. I go to the Total Blitz gym about 4 times a week, and I still manage to go to Bally Total Fitness at least once a week. I started this all on December 30, 2005. I weighed in at 173 lbs. and was at 22.1% Body Fat. My goal is to get down to about 14% Body Fat. I'm not too concerned with my weight, as I would love to weigh 165-170 lbs. if it was predominantly muscle. I don't know where I am after a month, but I honestly won't consider myself to be losing weight until I see inches come off my love handles and gut. I'll just have to work harder to achieve the goals I want.

On the professional side, I have signed myself up for accelerated computer training, i.e., a boot camp. Specifically, from February 6-12 I will be in Austin, TX working my ass off to get CCNA & CCDA certified. I am not being sent there by my company (although it is much appreciated that they are giving me payed time off to attend); I am paying out of my own pocket to take this course. I am excited and nervous. I believe this is the best action I can take, as I have found it harder to self-study for the CCNA certification. My hope is that by attending this boot camp I am placing myself in an atmosphere where I will thrive and learn. As opposed to reading a book on the subject, I will be able to engage in labs, simulations and lectures from a CCIE professional. I hope to be a CCIE myself someday, so this CCNA certification is the first step on that path. A friend and coworker of mine has already taken this course and has given me some good advice (doesn't hurt that I also see this in terms of a friendly competition as well, so I'll want to do as well as he did).

I haven't achieved my goal of finding a girlfriend, but then again I haven't really tried since I have this training class next week. Also doesn't help that I love geeky things like this:

Well, I hope to be updating you all next week from Austin. One friend of mine has already started suggested places for me to visit while I am there. I hope you all are well, and I will post again soon.

(Update, 02/02/2006: OK, I do know how well I've done working out this past month. My weight has risen to 174 lbs. but I went down to 21.2% Body Fat. So I am losing fat and building muscle. It's a good start.)

... and yet not the way I would have liked to start off

So in my last post I spoke about how I would like to start off 2006 on the right foot, by getting myself in shape and working to increase my skills professionally. I joined a second gym and was being diligent in working out 3-5 times a week. Then I go and get myself sick.

I hate being sick, especially when all I've got is a slight case of a cold but it's enough to keep me from doing anything strenuous. I've had it for the past week, and made it through most of the stages (i.e., sore throat -> low fever -> stuffy/runny nose -> congestion/sinus pain -> cough) so I expect to be over it pretty soon. I just hate how I know I'm sick and feel winded by this illness, yet I think I can still go out an exercise. Either make me sick enough where I'm bedridden or leave me alone!

Anyway, that's enough of my whining. Got some things to work on today, but I hope to be posting again soon.

Starting the New Year off right

This is what I call a good start to the New Year.

The Bears are the NFC North Champions and the 2nd seed in the NFL playoffs.

The Buccaneers are the NFC South Champions and the 3rd seed in the NFL playoffs.

The Gators won the Outback Bowl by beating Iowa 31-24.

Spent New Year's Eve with all my friends at one of their houses. Had a very good time, but kind of took a laid-back attitude to it all. Plenty of food was eaten, but I didn't really drink much. Honestly didn't feel like it, and was driving that evening anyway. I never make any resolutions, but I do have some goals for this year.

  1. Get in shape! I already have a membership to Bally Total Fitness which I use as much as I can, but sometimes I get lazy and don't drive out there to workout. Usually, this happens after I get home from work and I know I should workout but I end up staying home. Well, no more excuses. I joined a second gym, The Blitz, which opened up in the shopping center across the street from my neighborhood. It offers a complete workout in 20 minutes so I have no reason why I can't go there everyday. I just started with them, so I'll see how I look and feel in a couple of months.
  2. Improve myself professionally! Lately I have not felt as though I have been accomplishing the goals that I have set for myself professionally. I honestly feel that I have let myself become complacent in terms of my job and skills, and as I look back I believe that I have wasted my talents in doing so. There is nothing wrong with my job, but I always set high expectations for myself and as I evaluate myself up to this point in my life I feel I haven't lived up to my standards. What I hope to do to change this is to get back in to programming, maybe learn a specific skill or get a certification (CCNA), or change my surroundings. It will also require me to make some changes to my lifestyle, mainly just set aside time to start educating myself but that is not a big deal and will only require some discipline.
  3. Improve myself personally! Besides getting myself in to shape, I have also set aside some personal goals for myself. I would like to learn some foreign languages, as I have traveled quite a bit in my life and I would like to continue to do so (already planning on going back to Japan later this year). I would like to learn to play the guitar. And I would like to find myself a girlfriend.
Now, this all sounds like resolutions but I don't think so because I haven't set any kind of time frame on any of the goals I have listed. I know it will take time for me to achieve what I want, so I have no illusions about getting all this done this year. I will use this blog to make periodic updates on my progress on all these goals, and hopefully I will be able to look back at previous posts and see the differences.

Lastly, some of you may have noticed a new item up at the top-right of the blog. That would be my Xbox Live Gamertag. Yeah, if I wasn't enough of a gamer before now I have an Xbox 360. I never really intended to get one but circumstances brought one to me. I have to say it's a pretty neat little system. I only have two games for it, Dead or Alive 4 & Perfect Dark Zero, but that is good enough for now.

I hope everyone has gotten off to a good start here in 2006, and I wish you all well. Check back soon.

Hail to the Holidays

I always enjoy this time of year. Despite the increase in traffic everywhere I go, I have great fun around Christmas. Last week I attended two Christmas parties, and my thanks go to KS-1 & his wife, and Jersey & Jill for being such wonderful hosts. I would have liked to do more myself for Christmas, like send out Christmas cards to my out-of-town friends and buy some more personalized gifts for people instead of handing out gift cards. But regardless of that, I've had a great week.

Now, my family celebrates the entirety of Christmas on Christmas Eve. It's the way my Dad was raised, so it's been our tradition as well. I went to my parent's house yesterday afternoon and we had a nice, quiet dinner. My Dad had requested we have roast turkey, just like on Thanksgiving, which ended up tasting perfect. Round that out with some home made sides and it was the perfect meal. Afterwards we opened gifts. I didn't ask for much this year, but I received a nice set of martini glasses from my sister and her family, and from my parents I got some newer clothes. I also received many gifts from my friends, among them being some DVDs, shirts, games and books. But the best part for me now is hanging out with family and friends.

Being Christmas Day today, I find myself not doing too much. I've been catching up reading some magazines (Maxim, Play, Newtype) and I plan on watching some DVDs today. Also need to finish up Darkwatch and play some more of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness.

Well, we're fast approaching the new year. I have some great hopes for next year, which I will expound upon at a later date. I hope everyone has had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Happy whatever you celebrate!

Why?

Why do such horrible things happen to some of the greatest people? At such a joyous time of year, sad news like this should never occur. My thoughts and prayers are with the Dungy family.

I could never be a spokesman for the beer industry ...

So, I was having a good week up until yesterday. This past Monday was my birthday, and from Sunday through Tuesday it was a pretty good week.

Sunday, my parents treated myself and X to brunch at The Oyster Catcher. Their brunch is absolutely exquisite. Plenty of food available, both hot and cold dishes, plus all the oysters one can eat. Now myself, I don't really care for oysters at all but X can only be described as the oyster's natural predator. The man usually has 5 dozen oysters plus about two plates full of the normal fare. I am waiting for the day when I see a Wanted poster up at the front door saying not to let X in for fear of him eating them out of business! Now, after brunch X and I went home and just chilled out watching the various NFL games that were on. Got a call from Badstar, and met up with him and some more friends who all wished me a Happy Birthday. We ended up going out to dinner and it was a pretty enjoyable evening.

Monday I pretty much did nothing. Received calls from my family, all wishing me well on my birthday. Also received calls and cards from my friends. Near the end of the day, my parents took me out to dinner and then I spent the evening with them.

I don't really ask for much on my birthday. As I have gotten older I have realized that all I really want to do on my birthday is spend some quality time with family and friends. My friends usually complain that they can never get me anything for my birthday, since I usually buy whatever I want for myself. The way I look at it, I tend to have eccentric (and sometimes expensive) tastes so if I see something I like I just go ahead and get it. All I want from my friends is to go out and have a good time with them, and maybe a gift card or something.

Now Tuesday was the start of my downfall for this week. I knew X was going to have a long day at work, so I figured it might be good to get as many people as I could out to a local bar here in Tampa, Bilmar Station. Bilmar Station has what they call "liter night", where all domestic and imported draft beer is sold by the liter at discounted prices. X, JerseyStrangler, Jill and myself all went out that evening and it was a fun night. We stayed out until about 23:00, then we all dispersed to get home and get some sleep. Now, I have a rather checkered history when it comes to beer. I can drink hard liquor as much as I want, but sometimes I can get sick off of one beer. It doesn't seem to matter how much I hydrate myself, and none of the normal hangover-prevention tricks seem to work for me either. Now, this problem doesn't happen all the time; it just seems like some days I just can't have beer. So, we went out to this bar for liter night, and I had about 1.5 liters of Spaten Oktoberfest. Thought I drank plenty of water to keep myself hydrated, and when I got home I took a multivitamin before going to bed. Wake up the next day, feeling nauseous and have a migraine. Called in to work, and tried to sleep it off (I had only gotten about 5 hours of sleep so far). Slept for a couple more hours, and now I'm feeling worse. I tried using the healing powers of the HD version of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, but even it's heavenly glow could do nothing to heal my body (but my soul was doing pretty good). Eventually, after about a full day of fitful rest and two prayers said to the porcelain god, I finally got whatever poison I had out of my system. The worst part about that day is I couldn't even work on some personal projects, since I couldn't do much more than read for short periods of time. I simply don't know what it is about beer that does this to me. I could have had only 1 pint, and I still would have gotten ill. But give me the same amount of liquor, and I'd probably only have had a slight headache the next day.

Well, I'm better now. Just wish this didn't make me feel like such a lightweight some times. Guess I'll stick to rum, whiskey and gin from now on.

Why Dracos shouldn't fix his PC at 03:00

Happy to say I had a great time during this past holiday weekend. I absolutely stuffed myself on Thanksgiving, and had a wonderful time visiting my parents. Then this past Sunday we celebrated birthdays for X and EvilBadstar (X's was on the 27th and Badstar's was on the 29th). Once again, we had plenty of food and friends around to help celebrate and everyone had a great time. And Badstar is our Guitar Hero.

So overall it has been a pretty good week, omitting the normal work complaints. Unfortunately, I did have one problem that has taken most of my free time. Last Friday I came home to find that my main PC had lost its harddrive. Being a computer geek, I do not enjoy coming home and finding my computer on a DOS screen informing me that I need to remove or replace a non-system disk. I lost everything on that PC. And despite my efforts, there was no way to recover the data. On top of this, I was already experiencing problems with my monitor as it would like go blank even though a video signal was still present. So, after about 3 days worth of work and almost $600 worth of new equipment, I'm back up and running. Sad thing is, I knew this was coming because my now useless harddrive had been making "clicking" noises lately which usually indicates that it is about to fail. I had always planned to have two harddrives in my machine and set them up as a RAID 1 array. But I never got around to it and now I payed the price. It is taking a very long time for me to reinstall all my applications and data on the new harddrives ...

... Bah, I don't like how this post is going and quite frankly, it's too damn boring. In summary:
  1. Thanksgiving = good!
  2. Birthdays = good!
  3. PC blowing up = bad :(
Now, just some links I want to mention.

Later.

News and Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow, has it already been about a month since my last post?! I guess I have a lot of catching up to do (again), so let's get right to it.

  • First, I would like to belatedly congratulate a friend of mine who I have known since high school on her marriage to a very lucky guy. Back on Saturday, October 22, Christina Green married John Rankin at St. Paul Catholic Church. I have had the privilege of knowing Christina throughout high school and college, and I got to meet and get to know John for probably a little over a year now. I can't think of too many people that are as lucky as these two to have found each other, and I wish them the best and more. Unfortunately, I could not attend the wedding but I just want to say that my thoughts and prayers were with them on probably the happiest day of their lives.
  • I would also like to congratulate two other friends of mine, Vanessa Benchea and Christel Muñoz. During the weekend of November 4 - 6 they competed in the USTF Winter Nationals, a Tae Kwon Do tournament in Dallas, TX. Christel placed 3rd in her division in the Forms competition. Vanessa placed 2nd in her division in both Forms and Sparring. A belated "Congratulations!" to both of you on your accomplishments, especially since this was the first tournament that either of you competed in (if I remember correctly).
  • This past weekend, both X and I were invited to join JerseyStrangler and his girlfriend "Jill" for a night out at Channelside to celebrate Jill's birthday (I will continue to protect the true identity of "Jill", as only those with the highest clearance can ever learn her name). Now, I have know JerseyStrangler for a long time and I have gotten to know Jill ever since Jersey started dating her. They are great people, and I am always extremely honored to be invited out with them (as well as invited out with any of my friends; you never know, they could all want some alone time with their significant other). So anyway, we went out to meet Jersey, Jill, and about 8 more of their friends outside of the Bennigan's in Channelside. Channelside was packed that evening, so when we finally parked we still had about an hour and a half wait to get a table at Bennigan's. We had a good time waiting for the rest of the group to get together, occupying our time with just some idle banter and alcohol (did I mention the numerous drink stations expertly arranged out in the courtyard?). Being Jill's birthday (ok, belated birthday), X and I decided that we would make sure Jill would not go thirsty that evening (of course, I made sure that Jersey was driving home that night). We got into Bennigan's, and continued the good times with more banter, food and drink. Once we were finished there, we moved over to Splitsville for some billiards. It took a little while to get a table, but everyone kept themselves occupied. Some of the girls went over to the dance floor at one end of the place, and X and I followed to make sure nothing happened. One thing did happen ... we laughed our asses off at some striped shirts who were fulfilling the stereotype. I had to go back to the billiards tables pretty quickly, otherwise I would have fallen over from laughing too hard. So we finally got a table around 12:30 or 1:00 AM, and we took turns showing how bad each of us is at billiards until about 2:30. At that point, everyone pretty much decided to head back to their cars and then home. X and I ended up walking Jersey and Jill back to their car, partly to give Jill her birthday gift (X forgot it in the car earlier in that evening) and also to make sure they got to their car alright. Now, X and I are each on either side of Jill supporting her as we go up the stairs to the fifth level of the parking garage. Jersey is leading the group, as he has the keys as well as all of Jill's gifts. Now once we reach their floor and start walking to their car, Jill suddenly exclaims in the middle of her rambling (sorry Jill, you were rambling on about things the entire time up the stairs; X still doesn't know what you were talking about), "... and someone has got a hold of my boob ...". Immediately X and I put our hands in the air as if this was a robbery. To this day, we both deny any charges of inappropriate conduct. And in fact, it may not have bothered Jill too much, since she grabbed hold of both of us and continued walking to the car. I don't think Jersey was too happy, but then he had no indisputable evidence that anything had happened. However, if we look at the hypothetical event where something like that did actually happen I would have no choice but to accept responsibility for it myself. You see, I am a master at ninjitsu (in my own mind, anyway). If it pleases the court, I would like to display Exhibit A. The woman in this picture didn't even realize I had cupped her breast until she saw the picture on her camera. So, in that parallel universe where Jill was groped then the only sensible explanation is that my ninjitsu has achieved a level so beyond that of our mortal senses that even I didn't know I was doing it! (Kakashi-sensei would be proud, I would think.) Upon further review, the play stands as called on the field. First down! ... I would like to once again thank Jersey and Jill for inviting me along that evening. They may not think too much of it, but I always consider it an honor to know my presence makes things more enjoyable.
  • I really can't say it any better, so just look at this post on Badstar's blog.
  • I don't play World of Warcraft, but about everyone in my circle of friends at least knows about the Leeroy Jenkins video from that game. Now, Leeroy and WoW have been immortalized on Jeopardy!
Lastly, I just want to wish everyone who may be reading this a safe and happy Thanksgiving! I know I will be spending time with my Mom and Dad, and I hope everyone will get the chance to spend the holidays with those that are special to them.

Until next time.

-Dracos

Happy Halloween!

Had a pretty good weekend. We hosted a Halloween party this past Saturday and I had a really good time. Had a pretty good turnout, both in amount of people and percentage of those who wore costumes. X made plenty of food (when doesn't he?), got some pictures, and everyone spent time talking. The following movies played on the big screen during the night: Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness and House of a 1000 Corpses. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and although it was a smaller turnout (4 couples, then two hosts) I think I wouldn't have wanted many more people showing up. It's been a while since I threw a party at my house, so this was a good gauge in case I want to throw some bashes before the year is up.

Just a couple of items to report. Was reading Slashdot earlier today, and they linked to a review of a book that I took an immediate liking to. In fact, when talking to Badstar earlier today and he suggested we meet up at Borders tonight before RAW, I decided I would purchase it. A few of us used to go to Borders often. We would all meet up and peruse the isles, then usually sit in the coffee shop and chat. Most of the time it would be idle banter, but when you're amongst friends you really don't have to talk about anything important. Lately, we all haven't been able to meet up like we used to. On those rare occasions that we do make the time, we usually chat while walking around the store, because once we're done someone usually has to be somewhere. I'm not complaining, I just wonder where all my free time has gone (obviously not that far if I can sit here at 12:08 AM typing this). Anyway, picked up the book I was looking for as well as another one titled The Modern Drunkard. Any book that lists it's first chapter as "Real Drunks Don't Drink Zima" is a book I need to own!

Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween, and I'll be checking in later.

Rock the Vote!

I can only hope that the 2008 Presidential Election comes down to these two men.

blah ...

Luckily, where I live in Tampa we experienced minor effects from Hurricane Wilma as it travelled across the state this past Monday. However, there were plenty of homes and lives that were greatly affected by this storm. If you have a spare moment please take some time to pray for those who have lost so much, and take the time to be thankful for all that you have.

It's almost 9 0'clock on Wednesday morning and I feel like I could fall asleep right here in my chair. I've been up for almost 3.5 hours, so it's not like I just woke up. I should be used to this by now, but no matter how long I've been doing this (getting up early for school/work) it never seems to get any easier. I would say this is some sort of jet lag attributed to my vacation in Las Vegas, but I got back two weeks ago so that's not really an excuse. Just another sign I'm not as young as I used to be, I guess ...

Not much going on down here. Obviously, the state is in recovery mode due to the latest hurricane. Locally, Tampa seems to be as normal as ever. I know plenty of businesses were open on the Monday that the hurricane rolled through. Personally, I'm hosting a Halloween party this Saturday night. I hope to get a lot of good pictures that evening. Hopefully, all of you have plans for this weekend, although please be safe while you're out.

Pimpin' the Band -- Second Time

First, an update on the current hurricane situation.

Second, I just wanted to promote a couple of my friends' bands.
  • Midnight Bowlers League -- rockabilly band based here in Florida that Badstar is a part of. You can check them out here or here.
  • Ladies of Deathrow Swimsuit Calendar -- another band that Badstar belongs to. Words simply cannot express, so look here and here.
  • Tampa has Crushed the Hopes of All of Us -- Badstar's solo effort. Get a taste by going here and here.
  • Negative 8 -- a good friend of mine who lives in Connecticut plays drums with this group. Edit (17:01 EDT): might help if I actually link to their site.

Starting up again ...

Christ, it's October 20th already?! Has it really been that long? ... Well, it seems I've been slacking on the blogging front. I'll try to catch everyone up on some things as I have done quite a bit since last time I posted. Also, I have decided to open up my readership a little by informing all my friends about this little page. I'm hoping it may spur me to be more active in posting. And some of my old friends who I don't talk to much anymore might want to know what's going on.

So, I haven't looked at my last post (Ammy actually made the last post on the blog) but if I remember correctly I had mentioned that I had gone to the ISKA World Martial Arts Tournament in Orlando. So what's been going on since then ...?

  1. Better to get this out of the way and just rub it in now. Got a new car. 2006 BMW 330i. Monocco Blue metallic paint. Manual transmission. Chrome trim and leather interior. Woohoo!
  2. For all you guys out there, a very important public service announcement.
  3. Been surfing the Internet recently and was pointed to these articles. I want you all to read and enjoy the following articles. Read, and know that you've met these people before. Please enjoy ...
  4. I swear one day I will actually get my website up and running.
Other than that, things are decent down here in Tampa. We'll see how things are in a week.
